The most common Relief Society activity groups I’ve heard of are Book clubs, exercise groups, and Young Mom’s groups. Occasionally, after passing out an Interests Sheet, you might see a class on photography, scrapbooking, or museum trips.
Enrichment nights are often dinner or maybe a humanitarian project. Again, if you are doing something more exciting than this, please tell me.
Relief Society has far more potential than what this offers. We are women with purpose. Please remember that. Please believe it. Please work toward this. We must find that potential in our sisterhood, in our wards, in our various parts of the world.
If we were to focus on the three-fold mission of the church, valuable, fulfilling ideas would abound. These ideas do not need to be organized by the Presidency. They can come from one, two, or more sisters that have a particular interest and desire to stand up for something and act.
Proclaim the Gospel: What are some ways we can spread knowledge of the gospel?
- Combining efforts with Interfaith groups
- Standing up against an immoral society
- Understanding, voting, and running in our political venue
Perfect the Saints: How can we prepare for the Coming of the Lord?
- Help in raising our families in righteousness and love
- Debt reduction, financial education, and self-sufficiency
- Temporal and Spiritual Preparedness
- Service toward our fellowmen
Redeem the Dead: Where else can we “save souls” and provide temple blessings to the world?
- Everyone can do something, to further knowledge of our ancestors, whether it be gathering, organizing, researching or computerizing information
- Let everyone strive to receive a temple recommend
These are not new ideas, nor are they anywhere near all the possibilities. Relief Society is an organization that helps us to act with divine purpose in order to bless so many many lives.
Oh I don’t know…learning to paint a wood bunny is always fun isn’t it? J/K
I loved your post… it made me think of the real purpose that the RS was organized. It is refreshing to know that others understand that as well… so many times the “bunnies” seem to win out and be heard the loudest!
Thank you for helping us remember the great work that is possible for the RS organization.
