General Conference: our most up to date scripture. What we need to hear right now. The question we need to be asking ourselves is-What do I do with what I just heard?
It’s hard to put all the talks into a nutshell, but what I got out of Conference is that we need to show an increase of love. From loving those who are closest to us as well as those who need an opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Even those who can’t be helped in any other way than a clean blanket, food, and clothing.
Just think, if we are pure, we can invite others to be pure. The world is spiraling down ever faster. But we don’t have to go down with it. I love Pres. Monson’s words, “We will survive a world of permissiveness, because the Lord has prepared us.” We don’t have to be depressed, angry, or resigned. The Lord is with us; He has prepared us (for sinful worldliness has happened before), He has given us all that we need to return to Him, and He remains with us through powers unseen, yet real.
So, we have been asked/commanded to combat anger and hate with love. We have been asked to be believing and show our faith to the world. And who will ever forget Elder Holland’s adamant plea for us to know, and gain, an ever deepening testimony of the Book of Mormon and believe all the words of the prophets.
This is what Relief Society does best: love, serve, and prove faithful. And what can Relief Society do? We can do humanitarian service on a regular basis, thereby touching lives throughout the world. We can love our neighbors and associates into the church by exemplifying the gospel. We can even have a ward-wide challenge to read the Book of Mormon by a certain time (didn’t you love when Pres. Hinckley challenged us?). We can be virtuous through our honesty, responsibility, dignity, fidelity, charity, respectability, accountability, etc. We can aim high, and higher still, as we learn and teach plain, pure doctrine in all of our classes.
Dear Jan:
This was great. It is so true that much of the conference was concern about our loving one another more than we ever did before, as we remain pure. Our prophet encouraged us not to join the world’s spiraling down. And Elder Holland gave a magnificent speech about the Book of Mormon that should help us to acquire a deeper testimony of the Book of Mormon.
And as you say, the Relief Society can do that through loving, serving, and being faithful, through doing “what the Relief Society does best.”
Great message for all of us who love our prophet and our general authorities and try to please our Father in heaven as well as His Son Jesus Christ.
Great job, Jan!
