When summer comes around it’s hard to tell the difference between the Mormons and the non-Mormons. They dress alike.
Our young women wear as little clothing as possible. Or else they dress pretty grungy to their church meetings. Our society is very casual, and in order to fit in we have relaxed our own standards. But haven’t we been taught not to? Aren’t we reminded constantly to raise our standards, to be a light unto the world, to be a peculiar people? Some of our youth are not living up to that call. Some of our mothers aren’t either.
How do you teach this principle without hurting feelings? How do you fix the problem? Example is a big part of it. Teaching by the Spirit is too. Modesty clearly can’t be overemphasized. There should be a reminder lesson on it every Spring in both Young Women’s and Relief Society, or better yet, both together.
Just a few things for both mothers and daughters to think about:
- Our standards should be the same whether it’s Sunday or any other day of the week.
- If we are wearing garments, or ever intend to wear garments, we should keep those areas of our body completely covered at all times. That’s the very thing that sets us apart.
- Your clothes speak for you. If you are a daughter of God you should look the part; pure, virtuous and holy.
- Be aware of how boys will react when they see how you are dressed. They have enough problems with controlling their hormones.
- If you can’t find anything “decent” to wear, talk to your favorite store and see what they can do to carry what you like, or learn to sew your own clothing.
I love this topic. Modesty is an issue we should all be concerned about, especially those who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I believe that how we dress is a reflection on how we feel about the atonement itself. When this doctrine is taught at a level of correct understanding, then results will be seen throughout the world.
Thanks for addressing this important issue.
I love how you say that how we dress is a reflection on how we feel about the Atonement. To me, that stresses the importance of keeping high even the smallest of values/principles. The Atonement should be everything to us, and how we live our lives should show that.
